World’s Largest Renewable Energy Park Unveiled in Gujarat, India

By Suresh Kumar, April 13, 2024

In a groundbreaking achievement, India has inaugurated the world’s largest renewable energy park in the arid expanse near Khavda, Gujarat. This colossal energy hub spans an astonishing 538 square kilometers, which is approximately five times the size of Paris.

A Journey from Barren Land to Clean Energy Marvel

The story begins with an unlikely gateway—an airstrip that lacks an air traffic controller, where the only infrastructure consists of a portable toilet and a makeshift office in a container. This airstrip, located amidst miles of barren land bordering Pakistan, served as the entry point for Adani group head Gautam Adani, who first explored the area in December 2022. At that time, the land had no vegetation due to its highly saline soil, and habitation was virtually nonexistent. Yet, it possessed the second-best solar radiation in the country (after Ladakh) and wind speeds five times that of the plains—a perfect canvas for a renewable energy park.

Harnessing Sunlight and Wind

Adani Green Energy Ltd, India’s largest renewable energy company, spearheaded this ambitious project. Here’s what makes the Khavda Renewable Energy Park remarkable:

  1. Solar Panels: Thousands of solar panels now dot the landscape, poised to convert abundant sunlight into clean electricity.
  2. Wind Turbines: Wind mills harness the strong winds blowing at an impressive speed of 8 meters per second.
  3. Infrastructure Development: The barren land has transformed into a thriving site. Adani’s team built worker colonies, desalination plants (to convert saline groundwater into potable water), and even mobile phone repair shops.

The Numbers Speak

  • Investment: Adani Green Energy Ltd plans to invest approximately ₹1.5 lakh crore (1.5 trillion rupees) in the project.
  • Current Capacity: The park has already commissioned 2,000 megawatts (MW) of capacity.
  • Future Expansion: The company aims to add 4 GW in the current fiscal year (ending March 2025) and 5 GW annually thereafter.
  • Clean Electricity: When completed, the Khavda renewables park is expected to generate a staggering 81 billion units of clean electricity annually.
  • Environmental Impact: It will help offset 58 million tons of CO₂ emissions each year.

Challenges and Triumphs

The airstrip, used to ferry group executives from Mundra or Ahmedabad, serves as the last guidepost for airplanes heading to Khavda. Pilots navigate the final 80 kilometers, including landing, using visual aids and navigation systems. As Mr. Adani humorously remarked during his first visit, “Could anyone even find a mosquito in this area?” But today, Khavda stands as a testament to human ingenuity, resilience, and commitment to a sustainable future.

As the world grapples with climate change, the Khavda Renewable Energy Park shines as a beacon of hope—a testament to what can be achieved when vision meets determination. Let us celebrate this monumental leap toward a greener planet!
